I was told by my professor that schools used to do in person labs with actual Cisco equipment. However in order to maintain certification as a Cisco authorized school, they would need to upgrade their equipment every time Cisco made a new device, which was like ever six months.

Eventually this became such a financial burden for schools, that they were forced to just switch to Packet Tracer. Which is an objectively worse way to learn equipment.

Half the time you are doing labs you are fighting against some GUI limitation that wouldn't exist with physical equipment.
