I'm liking this Esack guy more and more... I might have to directly read his works on how heteronormative patriarchy is the axis of oppression in Muslim majority countries while playing into settler colonial narratives that are used to oppress religious and ethnic minorities elsewhere, with a major case in point in Israel which calls itself a gay-safe oaisis in the desert while bombing the fuck out of straight and queer alike in Gaza...

His rebuttal of Massad's assertion that LGBT people only exist in the west is quite good too. Massad's comments remind me greatly of liberal TERF comments on how American LGBT community is allegedly exporting queerness abroad, as if the most famous Bronze Age transwomen were not Babylonian Galli Priestesses of Inanna or the oldest explicitly Gay literature were not the Poems of 2 of the 7 Sages in the Bamboo Grove in China, or as if Two Spirit and related queer identities were not already a thing among Indigenous Americans.

I would argue that the assertion that queer identities could be exported from one place to another is only meant to support a narrative that suggests they are unnatural.

A hidden thing is not non-existent. It is hidden.
