My main beef with unions is actually the attitude of people i've met who are part of them. There is a general distaste towards business owners and a "they make a buck while I make a dime" kind of mind set.

If you look at the flip side of things, providing w2 wages with all of the benefits for a business owner, unless it's a giant corporation is prohibitively expensive. For example:

If you get made $1000 for a week of work (Just numbers for demonstration).

$50 retirement
$50 health insurance
$200 taxes
$100 union dues
$600 take home

For a business owner it would look something like:

$1000 to employee
$170 w2 employment taxes
$50 for retirement match
$50 for employee health insurance match

So, a non union employee paid $1000 for a week of work, costs the business owner $1000. A union employee paid $1000 for a week of work costs the business owner $1270.

Therefore raising the overall labor cost of simply having employees by almost 25%. In my state w2 payroll tax comes out to around 11% and health/401k are roughly $175/$150 respectively - so the actual increase in labor cost is roughly 20-25%

But of course, most employees don't know that the business owner is also charged taxes just for having employees, plus splitting the cost of each "benefit" with the employee. Most people just see "greedy business owner doesn't want to give us benefits" but more often than not it's business owner would go out of business giving employees those benefits.

I get tired of being lumped in as a "greedy business owner" and that's why i have a stick up my butt about it.
