But sure… tech goes wrong / isn’t perfect. Not sure what changes to iMessage will do to prevent the exact scenario you just described.
Same thing would happen with as stolen phone, SIM swap and inability to disable an android phone or get in touch to disable things in a similar fashion.
The stolen device protection will mitigate this too.
