Non destructive compression is the way to go.
OTOH, some people are SO used to the distortion on Youtube, streaming servers and their smartphone earbuds that a clean sound seems "flat" to them.
Started with CDs and the "Loudness War" of the late 80's and 90's.
Digital overload, over-compression and over-everything became the norm.
