Gardeners in Ottawa (and elsewhere): do you have to put a cage around your zucchini to protect them from the squirrels?

My neighbour says he can't grow zucchini because the squirrels are so aggressive that they even eat the blossoms before the plants can fruit.

Last year, I got exactly one golden zucchini on my vine (first time growing), so I expect that's what happened to me.
