I agree with your final point; no accident but a move to devalue democracy by making it like a consumer product, subject to whims of consumption - so as always we must ask 'who benefits', ands there the forces on the right can be seen to be clear winers (both politically, with the Tories current hiccup not withstanding, and financially in their ability to snaggle funds when in power).
