In the 70's and 80's, there were radio stations playing all kinds of music, so I naturally also listened to "Indian" music. Can't remember who my favourite singer in that genre was (but it wasn't Asha).
Watching film seasons on BBC tv, Indian films made under British control before 1948, the pacing and structure was more contemporary to now than the popular films of the 80's. I think the Busby Berkeley style Hollywood musicals had an effect on Indian film to produce the song and dance spectaculars that became the norm.
Almost never to my liking but I watched them anyway.
