We visited Kobe in the early 2000's, so about 10 years after this earthquake. As a tourist, there was very little damage visible. But the scars were still there, on the souls of the people we met. Everybody we met seemed to personally know someone who had perished.
The monument at Meriken Park made a big impression on us.
It is a sobering thought that, for all of our preparedness, we are still powerless against the massive forces of nature.
