But there were only four channels in the UK then - and one of them - Channel Four - was brand new. Thing is - all the other channels would shut down at night.
I know this is a difficult concept to explain today, but yes - the three major channels (BBC1, BBC2, and ITV) would actually *shut down* at about midnight.
