in 2025 the standard is wireguard, not openvpn. Also most of networkmanager configurations are a bit limited, for example usually vpn vendor clients do key rotations and other extra-protocol stuffs that makes it work with better privacy.
You can replicate that good behaviours and sane defaults with network manager, but you need to look for more and more of these leaks and misconfigs.
