So... just an SLR with a nice lens? I'm pretty sure he has that. I keep reading about things like tracking mounts, camera controllers, refractor telescopes, guide scopes, guide cameras, etc. It's overwhelming. I did mention that I was beyond naive, yes?

This is intended to be a gift from a large group of friends so the budget is somewhere in the $2000-3000 range. The real gift is in having it all set up and waiting for him. Maybe this is the wrong idea for a thank you gesture?
