This and leaving issues open still allows other users to communicate on stuff too. Sort of a central place to chat about what everyone else is doing. I'm actually part of an issue on an abandoned web extension project and others were running into the same issue. I replaced the project with my own complete rewrite and was able to share that with others, based on the original source. Where else do you go to chat about the dead project?
I totally agree letting people know your project is abandoned in the readme. But archiving adds some limitations too so that's not the best idea either.
