Folklore is full of tales of secret tunnels. It's claimed one runs from the George and Pilgrims Inn to Glastonbury Abbey. The tunnel, said to have been built in the late 1400s on the orders of Abbot Selwood, was apparently explored in the early 20th century by a Mrs Bilbrough. She edged down "a flight of fearfully steep steps, dark and damp and slippery' before finding the passage 'was only three feet in height, so that those who used it must have crawled on their hands and knees, resting at intervals where ledges are cut in the sides for that purpose." Another tunnel - reputed to run from the crypt of Glastonbury's Lady Chapel under the River Brue to the town of Street - is said to have been successfully navigated by a dog. #folklore #weird #gothic #psychogeography #tunnels #Glastonbury #pub #pubs #history
