If you put the mouse over a link, Safari will put the link target in the status bar. If you hold a modifier, it will amend the status bar with the action. This means you don’t need to memorise the modifier actions a priori, you just need to know that command and option (and sometimes control and shift) may change click behaviour, so you can try the combinations to get new tab, new window, new background tab, and new private browsing window. I can’t remember if it does the same with the back button: the modifiers work, but I’m not sure how they’re signalled in the UI.
