That's impatiently false, as much as I hate the guy. He wrote a lot of Z80 compatible code before buying (and rebranding) Q-DOS. They never would have been huge, but they would have at least survived long enough to sell off their IP in the early 90s.
One of the things Microsoft was responsible for was the BASIC operating system in the Mattel Aquarius - a personal computer of the early 80s with all of the features of a 70s personal computer.
