The one thing I like about Fluke is that you can easily find stuff to go with it, like clamps, thermoprobes, etc. The Fluke 87 is just kind of a standard. And you can always hit up a few pawn shops to find one for cheap, because tradesmen will pawn them off when they get new ones from work.
Like I said before, I've been very pleased with my Hioki meters, too.
I also have a Wavetek pen meter that's very compact and good for basic troubleshooting. It's barely bigger than a non-contact voltage detector (I carry them next to each other in the same pocket of my toolbag). And I have a Amprobe clamp meter, and an Amprobe analog meter. And a Tektronix 475 oscilloscope.
