Thanks to SimplyE https://www.nypl.org/books-music-movies/simplye and New York Public Library's e-lending, about 90 seconds after I thought that I'd like to reread John Varley's short story "The #Barbie Murders" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Barbie_Murders , I was reading it for free on my device.

Uneven, with a deliberately? unsatisfying ending. Originally published in a magazine in 1978; maybe Varley thought he'd be writing a sequel to resolve things.
