it's happened many many times before, during the history of the human race even, and the "recorded history" is literally like 2% of the estimated history of our species

the most recent event was called the Tian Chi Event

this paper discusses it

https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2014GL059439

it also mentions prior events like the Laschamp and Auckland excursions, these are volcanic eruptions that set in stone magnetic alignments that greatly differ to the magnetic pole we have now

Tianchi was only ~6000 years ago, and i just should emphasise that this is not carbon dating but dating based on the ages of stone, which is a much more reliable dating mechanism - the decay of stones can be much more precisely determined based on their composition and the surrounding decomposed/fractured stone/dirt and its similar or differential composition

yes, it happens, and has happened repeatedly at fairly predictable 6000 year intervals, and we are due for one now

it is really possible also that Tianchi was part of a global catastrophe that was recorded in ancient stories as the Great Flood and there are stories from south and north american, australian aboriginal, asian and african cultures that concur but the exact nature of what happened to each place differed, some described things that could be meteor strikes and airbursts, others involving volcanoes, floods, earthquakes, as well as tsunamis... very likely the Noah story was about a tsunami and pole shift, but it could have been just the simple result of the increased rainfall that goes along with a higher penetration of solar energy, that electrostatically charges the air for more cloud formation and triggers seismic and volcanic events as well as extreme weather events associated with more intense cloud cover and there can even be hundreds of kilometers wide lightning events also called "cosmic thunderbolts" which i think the australian aborigines describe in their Dreamtime stories, and images that could be depictions of the lightning are found in the Magura Caves in Bulgaria
