I've always said school should be a place where children's interests and natural talents should be developed and nurtured. Turns out Plato had the same idea over 2000 years ago. The basic structure of modern schooling is based on the model set up to churn out workers during the Industrial Revolution, 200 years ago. Consider, for example, how many children in the western world have been taught algebra in the last 50 years....there must be literally millions of them. Now consider what percentage of those kids actually used algebra in their adult life; I would guess it's less than 1%. So what's the point? Instead of forcing kids to study things they have no interest in and that will be useless to them in adult life we should be asking them what they are interested in and what they would like to learn. Imagine kids developing skills in cooking, building, stone masonry, animal husbandry, gardening farming, business, acting, singing, sport etc. I know this would be expensive and would require a complete overhaul of the education system but the rewards would be amazing. Kids would know exactly what they wanted to do when they left school because they'd already be doing it. And instead of dreading school lessons, kids would be looking forward to them instead. And I'm sure it would work wonders for children's mental health. Scrap this national curriculum bollocks that puts heaps of pressure on children and teachers alike. Instead of traditional teachers, have a host of mentors with experience in a wide variety of subjects. And if a child is interested in something that a mentor has no knowledge about, then they can both research and learn about it together. There are actually a few private schools now using this approach in Europe but I hope it's the future of education for everyone.
