Side story about Engadget and Ryan Block.

Ryan left Engadget around 2009 to start GDGT, a community focused tech review website that was... amazing for its time. Ryan built a fantastic pro review engine for their pro product reviews, and a very usable consumer interface for consumer-written reviews.

AOL (i think), which owned Engadget by 2013, loved it so much, they bought it, lock stock and barrel, from Block and Peter Rojas, and brought Ryan back as editor in chief, to incorporate it into Engadget.

I already knew then that was the deathknell for Block's GDGT project, though early on, efforts were made to really incorporate GDGT's review engine into Engadget.

Over a few years, that all melted away.

Ryan talked about the deal back in 2013 with bright eyes about it.
