So far, the mindblowingest thing about #linux is that it proves you never "needed" to turf your computer every four years. It's entirely possible (although I'm sure it's not *easy*) to make an OS that continues to work on fairly old hardware. #LinuxMint runs fine on a MacBook 2007. That's not a typo!
This treadmill we've been on for decades where the newest OS starts to chug after a few years--so you buy more ram, bigger hard drive, eventually a new computer--it was always a scam.
