No, you have it all wrong - they are just protecting us from ourselves: we don't really know what we want, we need an algorithm to decide for us. If the algorithm didn't curate material for us, how could they ever make money off their "free" platform?

It's paid off for them up till now too - the collective action problem keeps people trapped because of the potential of losing so all their connections to others.

TBH it never worked for me. The Fedi is the first place I really felt "following" users or hashtags was useful. I only ever used xitter for the makerspace I ran for about 5 years, and then only sporadically. I quit discord when I quit the makerspace.
I used to reply on Reddit - mostly on LearnPython, but when that started on enshittification phase 3, I ditched it.
I have never used fb, or the other socials. People ask if I'm on whatitsname, and I invariably say no; the next thing they say is something like "it's free to join" or "why ever not?".

As I have no presence, I have no switching costs. I just don't "do" socials. Except the fedi, which works like all the other ones should.
