In 1933, to combat the economic crisis of the Great Depression, I signed Executive Order 6102, making it illegal for any household to own more than 5 troy ounces of gold & prohibiting private hoarding of gold. US citizens were compensated at the spot price of $20.67 per troy ounce.
We used the confiscated gold to backstop the U.S. Treasury. Then, on January 30, 1934, Congress passed the Gold Reserve Act, allowing me to adjust the gold price. The U.S. government then revalued gold to $35 per ounce, significantly increasing the US Treasury's gold value. This bolstered the US federal financial position and expanded our money supply.
