Does #Bitcoin fix bridges?
I recently visited NYC for the first time, marking my second trip to the US. I was impressed by the skyscrapers, the cybertrucks, and tanning in Central Park at the end of October—unthinkable for a northeastern German. Although shocking how much better NYC's weather is compared to Germany's, what astonished me most were the bridges. Every 'no-name' bridge was a magnificent steel bridge—gigantic metal constructions so epic that sweaty tourists like me posed for pictures in front of them.
These bridges were built primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Back then, steelworkers earned about 15 to 30 pennies per day while working 10–12 hour shifts. People consumed a tenth of the energy we use today, only 25–30% of the population owned books, and the Department of Education wasn't properly founded until 1979.
Seeing these beautiful bridges today makes you wonder how these 'barbarians' built them and why we don't build such gorgeous structures anymore. We're much more technologically advanced—we have CAD software, superior steel alloys, and CNC machines—while they drew plans with pencils.
Imagine if we replaced the Brooklyn Bridge with a modern, ugly concrete bridge. It would rekk the scene's aesthetics and the tourist crowds would vanish. Everyone agrees these large, beautiful bridges look better than our modern ones, yet we build the ugly ones because we can't afford to create magnificent ones.
All this, even though technological advancements should make them more affordable. We should be capable of building bridges that turbo-mog the older ones in regards to gloriousness & beauty. But we can't. We're too poor. We must settle for ugly, cheaper substitutes of these masterpieces. Truly pathetic. And I wonder why.
