Years ago, as part of a complicated swap between a guinea pig rescue, a cat rescue, and a rabbit rescue org, that took place in the parking lot of the city pound, spouse and I adopted a 10-year old cat that no one wanted - he had been fostered with the rescue for months - because he was "so old he would die in a couple of years." Pickle lived to be 22 and was active, affectionate, fetching bottle caps, up to his last few days. 11 years later I still think he was probably the best cat ever.
