My brother and I rented surfboards on the beach and mostly failed at trying to stand while riding on the tiny waves. One time my orthodontic retainer fell out of my mouth and into the gulf after being swept off my surfboard. After dinner, my father, who grew up poor and always tried to save a little money said we should return to the beach and look for it. Not even knowing exactly where we had been on the shore, he found it with his foot in a shallow area where small shells and other ocean debris had collected. Being a devout Catholic, he quietly attributed finding it to divine intervention. On another trip to the beach, when I was older, I lost the trunk key for my car while surfing and had to find a local locksmith who wiggled a blank key around in the lock and slowly filed a replacement so I could get to my ignition key and wallet. My other memory is stepping on a stingray and getting barbed, which might have been the most physically painful things I have experienced in life.
