1. it is not true that the reason you earn money is for the time spent doing something
2. buybacks are not financial engineering different from the dividends of the most traditional and solid companies (they just have a different fiscal impact) and it is a way to remunerate shareholders that does not exclude R&D. You cite the example of Apple that spent money like this instead of doing R&D but Apple has a mountain of money to do both things and has burned more capital for R&D (for example on the project of a most abandoned electric car) than for buybacks.
