Tommie Smith set a world record in the 200-meter dash at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City with a time of 19.83 seconds. His record stood for 11 years. But the image of Smith and teammate John Carlos, both Black Americans, bowing their heads and raising their gloved fists in support of human rights, has lasted for five-plus decades.
