Next month will be one year on Nostr for me. And it's been a surreal experience.
I mean, what of the other the social 'platforms' do you get to be apart of the development in real time?
FB/Insta, X, LinkedIn, for example, are all built and updates are non negotiable. The walled garden is what it is. The End.
The development is executed and bugs are fixed behind the scenes by a huge team, paid for by debt backed VC money, who don't really care about the project but more interested in the return on their money. To make more money, not offer more value.
With Nostr, the devs are relying on zaps and grants (and more recently subscriptions) 🤯. They are incentivised to build tools which offer the most value to its users. This is because they are running on a finitite supply of funds. And are transparent with it.
Every sat matters. So every change log matters. And exactly why I think these tools are being built so quickly with great attention to what offers the most value.
I spent ~ a decade on the centralised platforms and not once did a dev reach out to me (privately and publically) to ask, what my issues are and how they can fix them for me.
I wouldn't know who the devs are on those other platforms. They're invisible and protected by the walled garden - anonymous. With Nostr the devs are pseudonymous - not anonymous. This is a very important distinction because 'one' can build a relationship with these builders even if it's an online character that protects their identity.
The community feels stronger when everybody is able to make a relationship with everybody. A hierarchy of power is not even a thing.
I'm just a nobody from a little town and this community has made me think I'm a somebody in such a short amount of time. I don't have to chase an algorithm to do it either.
The devs are shit posting just like the rest of us. Not making announcements on scripted videos, with newly permed hair claiming they will do their best to better protect our privacy. They are just doing it, no proclamation.
If Nostr devs didn't build, I would still be blindly chasing the algorithm like a crack addict chases the dragon. 🐲
I'm truly humbled
