A hot dog is meat (well, sort-of) with bread above and below it — until I read your post, it never occurred to me that anyone might think it's *not* a kind of sandwich. 😕

Unlike English, Dutch has different words for a sandwich made with two slices of bread (*boterham*) and a sandwich made by slicing a bun (*broodje*): perhaps that would help? English sometimes borrows Italian *panini* for the second one, but not consistently.
