Commercial whaling was banned by the International Whaling Commission in 1986 after whale populations were driven almost to extinction by humans.
Today Japan is one of only three countries – along with Norway and Iceland – that still continues to hunt whales.
Hideki Tokoro, CEO of a Japanese whaling company, says:
“We are proud of catching whales. We need to cull whales to keep the balance of the ecosystem – it’s our job and mission to protect oceans for the future.”
