Honest question: what is the PC way to say "transgenderism"?
In other words, I'm looking for a word for "the state of being transgender", similar to how "homosexuality" means "the state of being homosexual."
Wiktionary (pic related) says that "transgender" itself can have this meaning. But it sounds strange to use "transgender" as a noun, and (as they note) the usage is uncommon. Another reason why it sounds weird is that there is not only one "trans gender".
I'm also curious why "transgenderism" is considered non-PC. I understand that the "ism" suffix makes it sound like an ideology or religion rather than a state of being. But "lesbianism" doesn't seem to be non-PC, since there is a Wikipedia page "History of lesbianism." And "homosexuality" doesn't carry any stigma either.
