I feel like it is premature to celebrate either of these things — stating that you’re going to set up a nonprofit is literally just that: stating an intention to do a thing that essentially just governs your taxation status in a given jurisdiction.

People tend to infer all kinds of second-order benefits from that, and certainly the stated intent (very hand-wavey, zero details) is to Do Good Things, but the very lack of any tangible detail is concerning.

As for the List Of Celebrity Former Twitter Fans: LOL. LMAO. “We must free our social media from the hands of billionaires and put it back in the hands of millionaires” — did I get that right?

Step one is to ask for $4M against $30M to start a foundation that will do vague good things that basically consist of propping up BlueSky’s business model?

This is a monumental day for the future of the social web, though it might not be obvious for a while. Mastodon matures its governance model with a great, solid non-profit https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/01/the-people-should-own-the-town-square/ and a coalition of independents push to open up Bluesky's AT Protocol: https://freeourfeeds.com/ These two moves together put the most credible players on solid ground for years to come — and set up the open platforms to enable lots of innovation just when it's needed most.
