I was surprised at how pared down GOS was (not even a calendar?!), but then I realized that they're just giving you a pure(ist) AOSP experience.
I do recommend CalyxOS for first-timers, though. It's *very* user-friendly (except for the lack of a web installer), and easy to get going.
