My sister learned to waterski at 5. I had my tonsils taken out the summer I was 5 and couldn't get in the water. I was sooo disappointed that I wouldn't learn to ski until I was 6. I think of us bitty girls bobbing in the water, waiting for the boat to pull us upright, and wonder how my mother did it. Then I remember: as we learned, an adult was by our side. The engine's hum, the warm lake, the rat-a-tat-tat as we skied the washboard of the wake. No wonder these memories are so strong with me.
