I don't think the problem was the oil pan running dry, but rather bad oil routing & planning making it so the pump doesn't pump it to every part that it should. Might be wrong on this.
Incidentally, Rotax has a super clever solution for scavenging oil: They use an dry sump system and they allow the blow-by from the engine to pressurize the crank case enough to blow the oil back into the external oil reservoir. The things you can do when you have no environmental regulations to consider...
