There was a news story on #RNZ this week about people in #NewZealand hearing fewer cicada calls this summer. I've been monitoring cicadas alongside the other species I regularly count, and I had a quick look at my data for January each year.

While January hasn't finished yet, around Ōtautahi-Christchurch 2024 has had fewer cicada calls than normal. As Ruud Kleinpaste explained in the news story, this kind of variation is normal. I don't detect any overall decline.
