I'm sure they're having internal discussions about needing to go back to the drawing board on how their protocol is implemented. They aimed for a decentralized platform, but ended up with an incompatible Mastodon clone, and that must be frustrating for them too.
They have a very smart and talented team who've built a lot of distributed things over the years, it must be hard for those folks to be building a centralized chatroom.
If they redesign the whole thing to actually work as advertised and launch again, they'll lose momentum. However, if I were on their team I'd be advocating for them to do just that.
