thegreatape :gentoo: :nixos: :sway: (npub1j5l…wxv4) Dumb Idiot Retard (npub1074…r3s0) Afraid this study might be full of shit. Or rather, not, although in principle they're legitimately testing the worst case of a fully liquid stool, except they don't stress that limitation.

It's basically a "stomach flu" virus study, using a harmless to humans E Coli bacteria virus, a "bacterophage" as a proxy for noroviruses, one that's at the lower end of the sizes for the latter.

Biggest problem besides the fact that getting viruses from a home toilet is likely a very intermittent thing, and usually I'd assume somewhat so for "public" toilets, is that the paper authors don't justify their dosing at all. And they use and detect huge amounts of this virus, starting with 10^10 through 10^14 viruses in a bowl and finding for example greater than 10^7, or one million viable viruses per 1.5 square inches of toilet seat bottoms.

I have no idea if this is realistic, but I note that an infective dose of noroviruses can be less than twenty per Wikipedia per SCIENCE!!! and very hard experience in fast food joints or cruise ships that are careless about getting people sick like Chipotle Mexican Grill.

If their dosing of the toilet water is too high, this doesn't tell us anything about the utility of closing a toilet lid first when that's an option. For normal day to day scenarios especially in a household, I'd guess normal gut bacteria that you don't want elsewhere are the threat. And we seem to get by just fine with normal amounts of that, which I grant you is artificial compared to just shitting in the street or field.

Perhaps half of the Indian population is on to something....

I'm not sure the Ars Technica author understands the paper, and she and the four strong women and three men, one suitably brown (common Muslim masculine given middle name Khalid) may be pulling our chain. And the ending bit about "disinfectant/detergent dispensers in the toilet tank" quoting this paper is in the paper is merely referring to three papers in the bibliography. One about viruses and two about bacteria....
