Another thing I used to believe, but now realize isn't true, is the origin of the expression "to go south," meaning that something is going wrong or failing. For many years, I thought it was related to the American South or the Global South (often associated with poorer countries). So, every time I heard that expression, I thought it was a really cruel way to convey that meaning.
