Don't worry about being late to Bitcoin.
I found out about Bitcoin in June of 2011. Installed the program to mine then turned it off without mining any after reading a comment about how it wasn't worth it anymore as you could only get the reward once a day....

You get Bitcoin when you deserve it and you only understand it after putting in the time to learn about it.
