In theory the idea of separation of powers should have kept the various branches of government in check, but as many fucked up things in this country, Slavery and requiring a 2/3rds vote to removal from office from the extremely antidemocratic Senate means that Congress, the branch that *should* be the most responsive to the population is effectively toothless when it comes to keeping the executive and judicial branches in check. Especially with partisan politics.
