Until Abbot and Paxton find a way to bring back enforcibly sodomy laws (probably with a rubber stamp from the current SCOTUS), Texas cops probably consider gaybashers to be unofficial deputies. This is probably true throughout the South and explains the prosecutions that seem to reliably take place when gaybashers get stabbed or shot.

I have always believed that gaybashings should be resisted by force no matter what Christian police officials think. Fight them off, do what you have to do, and never report anything to the cops.

Back in 1986, the Hardwick decision (a later overturned SCOTUS ruling upholdng sodomy laws) unleashed a wave of gaybashings in DC. It was clear to the attackers that their intended victims could not go to the police.

I was already packing a knife for defense (pepper spray wasn't legal yet in DC and wasn't easy to get) and at that time guns were just starting to show up on the streets, so I was reasonably well-armed. When I was walking around in the then-Gay area of Dupont Circle, I deliberately concealed the fact that I never drink or use recreational drugs.

Almost every week some would-be gaybasher would attempt to physically assault me.

Every time, I drew my knife, chased them about a block, then let them go. Never did an attacker keep coming after I had a weapon out.

Beered-up gaybashers confronting what they thought was a drunk queer but turned out to be a cold-sober and armed queer activist generally understand they were outmatched. Eventually the attacks died out. No idea how much role these chases played in that.

I never called the cops. Self-defense is supposed to be legal, but I know damned well the cops don't follow their own laws. Reporting these incidents would have guaranteed prosecution for "assaulting" attackers they no doubt considered (and consider) unbadged deputies. As I write this, the statute of limitations is long, long gone.

A big advantage of pepper spray over a knife is that a maced gaybasher is far less likely to trigger an investigation that could lead to prosecution that a stabbed or shot gaybasher with no medical insurance landing in the public hospital. The threshold for using a weapon that rarely inflicts permanent injury or death is far lower, so you are much less likely to project hesistation that can draw a pre-emptive first strike. The threshold for firing a gun or swinging a knife when you are defending yourself from an officially condoned attack is rather high, and an opponent who reads resulting hesitation might try to disarm you.

You might still need a backup weapon in case your attacker can resist the mace (some can), but the odds of being forced to use it go way down. Conversely, if you pack a deadly weapon you should always also carry mace, so as to avoid being forced to choose between shooting an unarmed person and getting your ass kicked followed by being shot with your own gun.

Martial arts can go a long way to reduce the need for backup weapons but of course some opponents may also be armed. If they go for a weapon, ALL the rules go out the door and you are fighting for survival. Even if you lose, make them pay. Raise the price of attack so they buy less of it later. You are not only fighting for yourself but for your entire community
