What I'm talking about is called Asch conformity. Basically if people feel alone, they'll usually take the path of least resistance and go along with whatever the group is doing, regardless of whatever they personally believe, and no matter how stupid it is. Asch conformity can be easily defeated by a handful of opposing voices. This is why censorship of every kind is so important. The goal is to eliminate any opposing viewpoints to prevent ideas from spreading, but also to isolate individuals so feel like they're up against wall.

This issues you've faced up to now is an organizational and motivational one. You had the reach, breaking Asch conformity, but people lacked a meaningful way to actually do anything except donate via bitcoin. They needed direction.
