After living in rural Japan now I understand why Tokyo is the way it is.
Almost everybody in Tokyo comes from a rural area of Japan, and they are ashamed of it as they should.
So you have all this people who grew up basically in a medieval household, and they have the opportunity to live in civilization, and of course they are willing to do whatever it takes to escape where they come from. If that means working 100 hour weeks and never talking without being spoken to and never look at anybody in the eyes so be it.
