Some NYC brownstone walk-ups were constructed as tenements to contain multiple apartments. Many others, likely including this one, were built as single-family homes and later subdivided. These buildings often have haphazardly irregular floorplans, typically designed to squeeze every square inch of rentable space out of the building. Spacious public hallways were not a priority. Good luck moving your couch.
