it's unfortunately not just american, if anything I think it's more normal over there to have company restaurants, but I'm not entirely sure there either, let alone if it's free.

I do know that the dutch tax services considers it part of your salary and therefore giving it to random strangers is seen as a bad thing that tax services can get upset about. And I kinda really loathe that, food is not a luxury item, people don't steal food because they want to become rich, only when hungry 😶
