I'm not sure why it's so comforting for most people to assume there is a state of "normal". I still see a "new normal" being referred to, and I can only figure that the people using that phrase would rather adjust to the slowly boiling waters than leap out of the pot.
The only "New Normal" is now a varying state of deteriorating change.
"New Normal" for Covid is more and more people becoming disabled with Long Covid. It's more and more people struggling to think clearly, and to cope with easily getting fatigued. It's more and more people getting cancer, and diabetes, and that new weird rash, and hair falling out. It's more and more people dying suddenly of heart attacks and strokes and aneurysms, of young people getting serious illnesses more typical of later life.
"New Normal" for Climate is seeing more and more "hundred year" floods and "hundred year" mudslides and "hundred year" wildfires and "hundred year" storms. It's "unusual" Arctic blasts and "unusual" heat waves. It's pipes bursting that aren't built for a freeze, and sweltering homes that never expected to need air conditioning. It's wondering why there are songbirds and bears in Winter. It's wondering why there are actually so few songbirds now.
"New Normal" is watching the backsliding of Progressive policy, of seeing your Trans neighbors flee, of dodging violent reactions to the mask on your face, of fearing for your job security with stagnant wages and rising prices. Of not being able to afford a home. It's seeing people once exuberant to finally live freely, now paying a price for having opened themselves up to society, and feeling more and more helpless to protect them and yourself.
It's people telling you "actually" this is the New Normal, fall in line, get a grip, that it's somehow wiser to accept all of this happening than to fight it.
