Our brain-meat tells only half the story of the evolution of our minds. The other half is told by culture. We are all brainwashed by contemporary times, and some of these fundamental ideas that we integrate go hundreds of generations back.
Some stick because they resonate, and when they resonate for thousands of years and in various cultures, they fill a function. Others stick because there are powerful individuals and organizations who depend on them sticking.
